SPIRITUS AVEM

I began the semester by analyzing the pecking motion of the Pileated Woodpecker and how its movement informs the hole it creates. From this analysis, I created an instrument that abstracted the woodpecker’s motion into a swinging pendulum. From there, I designed a theoretical site whose form mimicked the instrument and created voids where one could imagine the instrument would collide with the surface. These voids were larger in points where the weight would hit, emphasizing its heaviness. This artificial site evolved to become the location of my exhibition space, utilizing nearly identical spaces to convey two different ideas: private and communal experience. The exhibition space was meant to be a spiritual environment that, in some moments, would cater to large crowds and, in others, would foster a personal experience of meditation and reflection.
