Signature Styles
The purpose of this seminar was to analyze the “signature styles” of various architects and draw inspiration from their methodologies, eventually leading to the creation of our own personal styles.
The course was divided into three phases.
In phase I, students were asked to choose an architect and recreate one of their drawings using a different medium than the original. I chose Frank Lloyd Wright as my architect, embroidering one of his designs and eventually turning it into a tote bag.
In Phase II, students had to take on the role of their chosen architect and create a hypothetical collaboration with a brand of their choosing. I decided to envision a collaboration between Wright and Disney. This theoretical line of merchandise was intended to act as a distinct display within The Disney Store, featuring a myriad of items ones could purchase.
Phase III involved exploring one’s own personal style and once again envisioning a brand collaboration. However, the architect this brand would collaborate with would be the student. I decided to “work” with Barilla Pasta and create a redesign of their pasta boxes. I utilized a style reminiscent of vintage travel posters which I had previously used in my own designs. The result was a series of colorful boxes which featured somewhat whimsical designs and a distinct sense of place.
